Does Teeth Whitening Work on Crowns, Veneers and Fillings?
Short answer: no — teeth whitening works on natural teeth only. Crowns, veneers and fillings are made from materials like porcelain and composite resin, and they don't change colour during a whitening treatment. This is true of professional whitening systems generally, not just one brand.
Why it matters: if you whiten your natural teeth, they may end up lighter than an existing crown, veneer or filling that was colour-matched to your teeth before. On teeth at the back of the mouth, that difference is rarely noticeable. On a front tooth, it can be — the restoration will stay its original shade while the teeth around it brighten.
What to do if you have visible dental work:
- Tell us before you book if you have crowns, veneers or fillings on visible teeth, so we can talk through what to expect.
- Consult your dentist if you're planning new restorations — many people whiten first, then have new work matched to the brighter shade.
- If a restoration is older, ask your dentist whether replacing it after whitening makes sense for an even match.
Having dental work doesn't automatically rule out whitening — plenty of clients with crowns or fillings on less visible teeth whiten without any issue. It just pays to know before your appointment.
